The Biden administration recently launched Conservation.gov as a the go-to clearing house on federal biodiversity conservation targets including the so-called 30x30 goal set by Kunming-Montreal agreement. Unfortunately, like so many massively important tools in government, the platform is based largely on the closed-source products from ESRI that fall short of the capabilities of open data and and open geospatial tools today.

We intend to use HuggingFace to present to colleagues in USGS and Dept of Interior, and non-profit partners like TNC an illustration of what an open, LLM-enabled interface to conservation data could look like. We have very simple mock-ups at https://huggingface.co/spaces/boettiger-lab/pad-us and https://huggingface.co/spaces/boettiger-lab/sql-chatbot. However, efficient rendering from queries generated in real time will require greater performance. Ultimately, we feel compelling examples of interactive spaces on huggingface could encourage more of our partner organizations in federal and non-profit agencies to escape the limitations of legacy commercial software for sharing and visualizing essential biodiversity data.
